Its history is marked by a journey of perseverance, shared vision, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Discover Our History

NEKI was founded as the Study Center in Computing by a group of friends at the University, initially as an informal project. The goal was to address the gap between university and industry. Initially, NEKI offered courses and events on Sundays, with hundreds of students sharing knowledge about emerging technologies such as Java, Oracle, and Linux.

The growth of activities necessitated the transformation of the Center for Studies in Computing into NEKI – “Nucleus Étude Komputacion Intelligence”. The change reflected in the expansion of the organization’s scope and its ambition to become a reference company in technology and innovation in Brazil, but still in search of a structure that would support the dreamed growth.

In the early years, NEKI enhanced its activities, establishing its presence in the market and enhancing local partnerships, while also widening its customer base. The company attracted students and professionals with training courses and events and celebrates its entry into LNCC (National Laboratory of Scientific Computing) incubator, a recognition of its commitment to technological development and innovation. At some point, the ‘Petrópolis-Tecnópolis’ movement was also consolidated, and by 2019, it would be renamed Serratec.

In 2004, NEKI went through several changes, including the restructuring of its brand shortly after a client suggested a rebranding a rebranding and it became a graduate company coming out of the LNCC incubator and now has its own space, in its own building.

NEKI was given the chance to launch its initial project on the DSPACE platform. This milestone allowed NEKI to be recognized in the national and international markets, as its first implementation was from the personal collection of maestro Tom Jobim and several other reference names.

NEKI implemented a strategic change by transferring its office downtown Petrópolis and also established its first office in Rio de Janeiro. Besides that, Neki had as a highlight project as well as having as a project highlight the support of architecture for the construction of the LRIT system that was implemented in Brazil by the Military Organization of the Navy, CASNAV. The initiative was awarded and is still mandatory because it implements the SAR events from Brazil’s treaty with NATO.

Neki reached another milestone by creating the first software/ICT residency, a precursor to SERRATEC’s ICT Residency made official in 2019, when CEO Marcelo Carius took over the chair. We also established a crucial partnership with the German Polarion, where we took several qualification exams in Germany from ALM.

NEKI underwent two significant changes: first, a part of the company was sold to Provider IT, which was looking for innovation and a team specialized in web environment. Subsequently, NEKI moved to SERRATEC in Quitandinha, Petrópolis.

NEKI’s partners have opted to buy back the portion of the company previously sold to Provider IT, a decision aimed at directing more resources to the development of their own products.

In 2019, NEKI had a remarkable year, coinciding with the birth of SERRATEC on June 12, the same date as the foundation of NEKI. Marcelo Carius, founding partner, took the chair as president of SERRATEC in the 2019-2021 term, consolidating himself as a leader in the regional technology sector. NEKI, recognized for its expertise, was invited to join the Board of FIRJAN SERRANA and the Board of MERCOSERRA, highlighting its contribution to the development of the sector.

In 2020, NEKI faced unprecedented challenges with the onset of the global pandemic. Faced with this scenario, there was a comprehensive reassessment of the company’s teams, costs, and offer, aiming to adapt to new demands and ensure business continuity. In this restructuring phase, the focus was placed on the creation of key performance indicators (KPIs) and optimizations were implemented in internal procedures, aiming to increase the team’s efficiency and productivity.

CEO Marcelo Carius stepped down as president of SERRATEC but remained as Chief Operating Officer. This year, NEKI created the Human Resources department in order to solve the global challenge of retaining the best employees. It also developed a spin-off company, alongside with three other companies from Serratec, resulting in TIC Social, focused on generating first-job opportunities for the region, highlighting diversity and compliance with the SDGs from the UN.

NEKI has reached another milestone by achieving Take Blip certification, expanding its technology and information offer, and becoming an authorized chatbot integration partner in Rio de Janeiro. We increased investment in the HR sector, bringing in specialists from the market and we changed the concept of HR to G&G (People and Management ― in Portuguese, Gente & Gestão).

NEKI is currently undergoing a comprehensive redesign to simplify and optimize its operations, including offer, procedures, and tools. The company is also establishing a marketing department and will participate in the Web Summit through HUB SPIN A.I., showcasing its computer vision and machine learning products. SPIN is an open innovation hub focused on Artificial Intelligence, in which NEKI is the technical lead.
